History

In the early 1970’s, Clube Luis De Camoes relocated from its home on Wyman Street to its current location on Porter Street. The Club has had many Boards pass through and have encountered financial difficulties a few times. In the end, the Portuguese community of Stoughton did what was needed to keep the club operating. Today, Clube Luis De Camoes has well over 250 members and is as healthy as ever.

Some people may wonder where the Club got its name. Well, the Club was named after Luis Vaz de Camoes, arguably Portugal’s best poet. Prior to 1550 he lived in Lisbon and stayed there until 1553. His stay in Lisbon was interrupted by a voyage to Ceuta where he was wounded and lost an eye. Camoes published very few of his poems during his life.
